Total Eclipse of the Heart

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
-‭‭1 John‬ ‭1:5-7‬ ‭NIV

As I’m sitting here watching in awe of the total solar eclipse happening today, I can’t help but think about how amazing our God is. The design and careful detail He puts into everything He created. I believe things like a solar eclipse were made to remind us of His mighty power. In a total solar eclipse the sun is completely blocked out for less than three minutes. Even though it darkens the sky, and the moon completely covers the sun with its dark shadow, it only lasts but a moment. The moon cannot block the powerful light of the sun for long and in a bright celestial explosion the rays of the sun begin to shine through and the sky is bright once again.

The eclipse reminds me of what Christ did on the cross the day He was crucified. Our sin and shame so full of darkness was laid upon his shoulders. Jesus paid the price, but this wasn’t the end of what happened.  When it looked like the enemy had won the battle, darkness covered the land and Jesus drew his last breath, that’s when God’s light really broke through. Three short days later, God Himself raised Jesus from the grave undefeated, in an amazing celestial display of grace, love, and mercy.  Jesus, a light incomparably powerful, has overcome the darkness and has defeated the grave! Jesus has triumphantly covered all our sins and won the battle! When we accept this precious gift, we too triumph over darkness. What He did can change hearts and lives forever. With Jesus as our light and savior, no darkness or sin can conquer us.

This is the kind of eclipse I want my heart to have, one where God removes the darkness of my sin and fills me with the light of His son. Where my life is forever changed by the power of His mighty hand. Where I, in-turn, shine His light so bright in this world that even darkness can’t snuff it out. Where God uses me to show people His great love for them, so they can come to know Him and learn how they too can have a total eclipse of the heart, and be forever changed by Jesus.

Father God,

I pray that you would eclipse my heart and cover my sin, that you would change my heart and fill it with more of you. That you would equip me to shine your light so bright in this world and that you would use me to show others of your great love, mercy and grace. Lord I pray that I will always walk in your light and remember the price that you paid so that I wouldn’t have to stay in darkness, and that I would glorify your name all the days of my life.

In Jesus name, Amen.
