We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
-2 Peter 1:19-21

In the last part of this series we talked about the kinds of light that we chase after that want to destroy us.  But the good news is, we have been given an unbelievably bright and good light to guide us.

My wife and I love to look at lighthouses.  We enjoy taking sunset pictures there, just going to look at them, and see the classic beauty of them.  We are fortunate to live somewhere that gives us the ability to get to a lot of lighthouses quickly.  We know now they are just historical artifacts, not really needed any longer with GPS and radar.  But, those lighthouses that we now think of as just art pieces, were once the salvation of many sailors and passengers.  Without those lighthouses, they’ve have spilled their lives on the rocks and reefs.

The Word of God, the Bible, is our lighthouse today as we navigate the stormy ocean of life.  If we cannot locate that light, if we are not fixed on those words, written by the very Spirit of God, not by the will of man but by the will of God, then we are doomed to sink to the bottom.  The Bible is how God speaks to us, it’s His very voice, and the only way that we can really know about who God is, what He has done, and why He has done it.  God wants to be known by us, and that’s why He has given us the prophetic message of the Scriptures.  If we keep our eyes fixed on that light shining in a dark place, then and only then, can we have victory in this life.  What a great gift!

Discussion Questions:

1: How does your life feel when you are in a regular pattern of reading the Bible?  In contrast, how does your life feel when you aren’t reading your Bible regularly?

2: When you spend time in God’s Word, what do you learn about yourself through it?  What do you learn about God through that time?  How does He reveal His will to you?

3: What are some things in your life that are trying to distract you from the guiding light of God’s Word?  What are some practical ways that you can keep your eyes fixed on the Scriptures?

Pray that God will give you a passion for His Word.  Ask Him to give you a desire for the bread of life, to make you as hungry for the Bible as you are for food, as thirsty for the truth as you are for water.  Pray that the Word will grow inside of you, leading in each and every area of your life, into the perfect and pleasing will of God.
