Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven.
-Psalm 107:28-30 NASB
Isn’t it amazing how, when we need Him the most, God always shows up in a mighty way? It may not be what we wanted or how we expected, but God is sovereign, and He wants good things for us. The maker of the universe has control of every detail of our lives. In those times when we are facing the raging seas He is right there with us, guiding us, protecting us, and ready to quiet the waves with His unending grace, mercy, or love, depending on what we need in that moment.
Even up against what we think are impossible odds, nothing is too hard for our God. I am reminded of this truth as I’m going through some struggles of my own. Four years ago I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease and fibromyalgia, which brought tremendous pain and inflammation on a daily basis. I was in so much pain that I was unable to work or do much of anything physical for eighteen months until it was brought under control. It was one of the hardest times I’ve ever had to go through. I had been working since I was a teenager, as soon as I could get working papers. My work was very was important to me, and it made me feel accomplished.
I not only felt useless but I was totally worn down, soul-deep, from the pain. God brought me through it and taught me so much about my worth in Him and gave me the strength to push on. I am back to work and doing much better now. I will always have some days filled with exhaustion and pain due to the auto-immune disease, and when today is one of those days, I know I need to lean more on the Lord to get through it. Recently, during my devotion time, the song “Eye of the Storm” by Ryan Stevenson, came on the radio. These lyrics in particular spoke to me as I sat here and wondered how to push through another hard day:
“In the eye of the storm,
You remain in control.
In the middle of the war, You guard my soul.
You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn.
Your love surrounds, me in the eye of the storm.”
So many times we find ourselves weathered and torn from the many trials in life. Whether it’s wondering how to make ends meet, temptation, illness, or the horrible pain of losing a loved one, God is never far from us. He is our constant, our anchor. He steadies the boat and surrounds us in His love so that we can make it through. If we lean on Him in those troubled times, He will be our comfort and strength. He will bring us out of our distress and bring us to our desired place of peace in the Holy Spirit.
I am so grateful we have a God who cares so much, that He rescues us, for now and for eternity!
Your love is amazing, and we are so grateful for Your presence in our lives. We thank You for bringing us through life’s storms and guiding us to the peaceful waters we find deep in Your arms. Help us to always remember that no mater what this world throws at us and through any hardship, we simply need to rest in Your unending love and call upon Your Spirit to bring us peace.
